Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how about Robotics or how to code to be a coach?
A: No, certainly not. Most good teams have two coaches. One of them helps the kids on the entrepreneurial side with their project, the other helps them with building their robot. It certainly helps to have ONE coach who is technical, but having both coaches being technical isn't necessary at all.

How do I learn how to build a robot and make it move?
There are lots of ways. A few tips:
There are lots of ways. A few tips:
- Learn about whatever you want to teach the kids outside of the weekly meeting (ie. not when the kids are looking over your shoulder).
- There are a number of good tutorials, but a number of Sycamore coaches swear by BuilderDude35's Youtube Channel.
- Don't be afraid of letting the kids teach you something new. Some kids know a lot, some know nothing. Pair up the kids to be coding buddies and let them teach each other.
- Find a mentor to help you learn.
Can I teach the kids by writing code for them or building part of the robot for them?
This is tricky. Every line of code used in the tournament needs to be written by the kids on the team. The robot needs to be 100% created by the kids as well
With that said, as a coach you can write code or show kids how to assemble a gear. After you show them how it works, just make sure to delete the program or take apart the pieces afterwards. This might be a little strange for the kids at first but they'll learn that when you do something, they need to watch carefully because you're always going to undo it. It's fine to help them by showing them what to do, just make sure to undo your work and let them redo it themselves. This is a great way to teach rather than trying to explain complicated concepts verbally.
